Blank New Notes (Templater Trigger)
When new daily, monthly, Dreamline, or yearly notes are created completely blank: the Templater 2.23 per-device switch, and the one-toggle fix.
You create a new daily note and it arrives completely blank: no banner, no buttons, no template, just an empty file with the right name. Same story for monthly, Dreamline, and yearly notes. This page is the fix.
What's Happening
The Celestial Vault's journal notes are assembled by the community plugin Templater the moment a note is created. Templater version 2.23.0 moved the switch that makes this work, "Trigger Templater on new file creation", into a per-device setting, and updating Templater turns it off.
With the switch off, Obsidian still creates the file, but Templater never fills it. Result: blank notes on that device until the switch goes back on.
This isn't something you did wrong. It's a side effect of a Templater update, and it hit every Templater-based vault out there, not just Celestial.
The Fix In v2.1.0
Celestial Vault v2.1.0 handles this for you: the plugin re-enables the switch automatically on every device. If you deliberately turned the trigger off yourself, the plugin respects that and leaves it alone.
If you're on v2.1.0 or later, there's nothing to do.
Not sure which version you're on?
Settings → Celestial Plugin → Updates shows your installed version, with a Check for updates button right there. Note that v2.0.x builds had automatic update checks accidentally switched off, so a manual check is the way to pick up v2.1.0. (See Keeping Your Vault Up To Date.)
The Manual Fix (Older Versions)
One toggle:
- Open Settings → Community plugins
- Find Templater in the installed list and open its options (the gear icon)
- Turn on "Trigger Templater on new file creation"
That's it. New notes work immediately; no restart needed.
It's per-device.
Since Templater 2.23, this switch is stored per device. If you journal on a laptop and a phone, check it on both. (On v2.1.0 and later, the plugin does this for you everywhere.)
What About The Blank Notes Already Created?
They're just empty files; nothing in them is worth saving. Delete and recreate:
- Right-click the blank note → Delete
- Create it again (a calendar click,
⌥⇧D, however you normally do)
The creation veil plays and the note arrives fully assembled.
